Events of 2007
On October 2, a concert-portrait featuring music of composer Yevhen Stankovych will take place in the National Opera House of Ukraine. On September 19, people’s artist of Ukraine will celebrate his 65-th birthday. Still, concert featuring the works of Ukraine’s one of the most popular composers shouldn’t be called memorial: except for the famous Symphony no.3 “I Reaffirm” with lyrics by Pavlo Tychyna (performed by National symphony orchestra conducted by Vladymyr Syrenko and National choir “Dumka”), new works will have first night. In the concerto for violin and orchestra no.2, written in 2006, Dmitriy Tkachenko will perform solo, while Andrey Viytovych (both Ukrainian musicians live in London) will perform solo in the concerto for viola and orchestra. On a side note, concerto for viola has already been performed abroad, as well as many other works of the famous composer. Specifically, this summer on the festival in Denmark “Sonata serenade” for flute and piano and Pieces for two pianos were played first time, and Trio for violin, cello and piano had a first night in Canada. Music of Yevhen Stankovych, of course, is also often performed in his homeland by the best orchestras and soloists of Ukraine. Soon a new revision of an opera on folk motifs “When the Fern Blooms”, will be made by the author especially for Donetsk theatre of opera and ballet. At the same time Stankovych is working on the new opera “Thirst for Vengeance” after the story by Gogol “A Terrible Vengeance”, on the request of National Opera House of Ukraine. Composer confessed that Gogol is one of his favorite and most honored writers. He’s already interpreted works of the writer by composing ballets “A night in May” and “The Night before Christmas”. Stankovych began work on the musical interpretation of “A Terrible Vengeance” with great responsibility not only because of the fact, that he is intrigued by this particular story of Gogol, but also because Boris Liatoshinsky, famous Ukrainian composer and Stankovych master, planned on writing an opera after the story, but didn’t get a chance.
